New England & Montreal 2014

At the Maine Welcome Center!

Great Trip!  We started in New Jersey, went to Boston to pick up Sarah at MIT, then onto see New England.  First we headed north, to Portland and then Freeport, ME for the first day.  Next, we headed on up to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.    After that, to Gorham, NH, then Montreal, QC, finally Burlington and Stowe VT.

Many great pictures and experiences!

Day 1  Portland/Free Port Maine

On the first day of our trip, we drove from New Jersey up to Boson, picked Sarah at MIT, a quick lunch at one of Sarah's favorite restaurants, Flour, then north up I-95.  First thru New Hampshire, then into Maine.  Our first stop was the tourist area of Portland.  here we wandered the various shops, looked at the luxury yachts in the port, and had chowder and fish & chips at a local seafood place.  The clam chowder was excellent, and it was so much fun to have Sarah with us.  The first couple of hours were just having fun with Sarah.  She had recently purchased the soundtracks for Fable, Skyrim, And Oblivion,a nd we all enjoyed listening thru the car stereo.  Numerous times on 95, we saw signs for moose crossings, but alas, no moose were seen on this day.  after Portland, we hit the road again, heading about 20 miles up the road to our hotel for the night, in Freeport.  We headed straight for the main LL Bean compound, where we discovers a mass of people gathering for a concert of some popular local band.  lL Bean was fun, but we didn't buy anything.  The concert was a hoot; the actaually had an interpreter for the deaf....that was a first for me.  We got some ice cream - I think Liz  and Sarah got blueberry to celebrate being in Maine, then finally to our hotel, a very overpriced Hampton Inn ($270 for one night?  Really?).

Day 2  Acadia and Bar Harbor.

The Acadia Loop Trail drive was spectacular; we made numerous stops along the loop to get out of the car and hike to the various sights.  We also drove to the top of Cadillac Mountain, where the views were great and there was a very cute gift shop.  We played with the pine-scented bags of tree-stuff, but did not buy any.  Liz got a bit sick or freaked out from the drive up, the rest of us didn' have any issues with it.  After all of that, we headed back to Bar Harbor (where we had lunch) and found a delightful restaurant serving lobster dishes and blueberry pie, all to an acoustic guitar and singer who was very good.  It was a truly wonderful dinner.  Then we walked down to the local grocery store, and bought some blueberry soda (yes soda, this being directed at my various midwestern family members who chide for saying soda instead of "pop") and blueberry pie.  After that it was a walk thru downtown then back to the hotel, where we discovered we were way too full for pie, and decided that the pie would make a wonderful breakfast for Sarah's birthday.  Soooo, we had pie the next morning for breakfast, and let me tell you, it is an even better way to start your day than it sounds.

Day 3  Gorham, NH

After leaving Bar Harbor and Acadia, we backtracked somewhat to I-95, then headed west across Maine and onto Gorham, NH, site of Mt Washington.  We saw it, drove around it, but decided not to go up - Liz was still shaken a bit from her encounter with Cadillac Mountain, and this one was six times higher up.  Seemed the prudent thing, and it did seem a bit expensive to boot.  But, we found a fun little pizza shop that had large, wood burning oven right in the middle of the dining room and had a delightful dinner.  The next morning, we had bagels and coffee at a little place called Eastern Mountain Cafe.  Great coffee and very friendly people.
Highlights:  Wood-fired pizza and a great coffee shop for breakfast.
