Picturesque clock towers in Old Town Zurich. |
Left on a Monday night - although it was thru the international terminal, it felt no different than a domestic flight, other than needing to show my passport rather than my license at security. The flight was a Swiss Air flight and it was very nice - like what I remember flying was like in the 70's and 80's. I had a lovely dinner of chicken in a mushroom sauce, had nobody sitting next to me, so I could spread out a bit, and got a pillow and blanket for the flight. I actually managed to sleep, I'm guessing at least 4 to 5 hours of the 7 and a half hour flight. Woke to breakfast being served, coffee, orange juice, blueberry yogurt, and croissants! Yum. Plenty of butter, too. Yeah, that was good. I am forcing myself to stay awake at this point to acclimate to the local time...we will land in about an hour.
So the purpose of this trip for me is to learn all I can from the Laser Enterprise people about how they manufacture VCSELs. My goal is to work, of course, but also see some of Zurich, as this is my first trip to mainland Europe, as well as the first time I have ever been in a primarily German speaking country. Having taken German in school for so long, but then having not used it for 30 years, I am curious to see how much I remember. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
As it turned out, the first day was the best - plenty of sight-seeing around lake Zurich and the Limmat River, and especially old town Zurich. The rest of the trip was work - two days of 8am to 6pm work, with a couple of dinners thrown in. The flight home was on a United flight and not as nice at the Swiss Air flight. Got some good pictures on the first day, however, which I will add to this description when I am at my computer.
